地处中朝边境的长白山南景区2008年8月6日正式对外开放，这里原生态旅游资源丰富，是长白山最后开发的处女地，它标志着长白山在中国境内的北、西、南三个景区已全面开放旅游。南景区为人类进行科学考察、生态旅游、扮清碰休闲度正雹假、摄影采风、绘画写生、房车露营、边境旅游、中朝界河鸭绿江源头漂流等项目提供了多样化的依托内容。随着海拔高度的增加，景区内的植被也由下至上依次呈现四个垂直分布带：针叶阔叶林混交带、红松为主的针叶林带、岳桦林和松桦相栖林带、高山苔原河谷湿地带，是欧亚大陆从温带到极地主要植被类型的典型缩影，而最后是裸露的火山灰石带。
长白山南景区内，可开发的旅游资源十分丰富，它包括全景的长白山天池，高山苔原河谷湿地、火山炭化木遗址、鸭绿江大峡谷等十二个著名的原生态景观，众多的已开发和正在开发的景点。千年炭化林遗址和高山苔原河谷湿地是亚洲仅有的自然景观，而鸭绿江大峡谷南北全长20公里，东西宽200多米，峡谷深达170米，恢弘雄壮、撼人心魄。
